Gaming music has evolved over the years from the 70s and upwards Chiptune and 8 Bit music from Cinematic to everyday life and everything in between. Some games require a settle sound to it like the new but old Crash Bandicoot and open world shoot them up games seem to require what I call every day music you know mostly stuff we have heard of what I mean is famous songs uncharted and charted belters. It does help like Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto to go with the famous music to make it seem more real and more importantly of that era. Grand Theft Auto and later games like Saint Rows, Scarface and True Crime pushed the boundaries of what defined a good gaming soundtrack and to pick the ones that suits all people and their needs. By having famous music it was more easier to paint the picture and be innovated by being the first couple but Rockstar gets all the credit for being first of the first couple but they were the first couple of games to use non traditional gaming music which by the arrival of the PlayStation 1 in 1995 and the game Tomb Raider 1 it was either cinematic or traditional chiptune or what I call adventure music. I think the Tetris theme played a big part in the big push of gaming music and why it’s heavily used in games to this day. The ever so annoying catchy theme which gets stuck in your head and the brightness of the theme has been repeated many times over from all the old school top games like Sonic, Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot and many other retro games. Also noted the Alex The Kidd music which was on Sega Master Drive and one of my favourite gaming soundtracks to play as it makes me happy and has a lot of nostalgic memories. The PlayStation which is what I’ll be concentrating on came out and already had so much superiority over anything that came out before and also backed up as a DVD player/CD player and me and mostly my friend still use it as a DVD player. It had that virtual world which no one or hardly a lot of people went on not to be quote unquote not to be weird and enough ram to fit quite a heffty amount of songs on in the games. Grand Theft Auto 3 was the turning point of how gaming music was perceived which if people remember the music came after and was originally classical music which did help me concentrate and I found set the scenes beautifully. The shift in Pop music what I know it’s short for popular music and music they may of not heard of or in passing opens up a whole new listening experience which is why I respect Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto as it broadens your taste or gives you music you like but for example you pretend you don’t like or you are snowed under with your own type of music which you enjoy more or favour when it comes to sticking on some tunes.  Â
#10 Aisha - Bounce Like My Check
This bouncy fun number by Aisha now called Sy Smith called Bounce Like My Check was on Saint Rows 1 and came out 2006. It always makes me laugh cos you know my checks are like rubber bands I’m only kidding anyway I don’t even have a cheque book. It’s actually a good one to play if you are broke and for the ones who cheques bounces or a simple reminder to place the cheque in the bank. When I first heard the song on Saint Rows 1 I couldn’t stop laughing and is what I think the music industry need more of instead of all this fibbing.
#9 Peter Tosh - 400 Years
Despite the undertones and reminder of slavery which it has only been 400 years since slavery I still think it’s a chirpy upbeat song and was found on the Scarface The World Is Yours gaming soundtrack which came out in 2006 on PlayStation 2. This song is easy to trace back and was first released in 1973 and was covered by both Peter Tosh and Bob Marley though it was written and performed by Peter Tosh. Â
#8 Black Star - Definition
Just two of my favourite rappers a duo called Blackstar which features rappers Mos Def and Talib Kweli. This was featured on the game True Crime New York City and was the game was released in 2005 but the song was released in 1998 and quite a popular Hip Hop song and duo or MC’s. It’s one of my favourite on the soundtrack and I think is partly or full out the true essence of 90s Hip Hop to be taken serious as a serious MC.
.
#7 Scientist - The Mummy's Shroud
More good ass Reggae from a Reggae artist called Scientist. The song was featured on the Grand Theft Auto 3 soundtrack and was on the radio station Kah Jah. The song first came out in 1981 and part of the creatures dub special which with new technology starting in the very late 70s it opened up many doors including the making of Dub Reggae that Scientist and other noted person Peter Tosh pioneered in Jamaica.  Â
#6 - MC Lyte - Paper Thin
MC Lyte needs no introduction and is the heavy weight in the Hip Hop game and one of the true female MC G.O.A.T.s. The song was featured on Saint Rows 1 but first came out in 1988 and is one of my favourite songs from MC Lyte. What I like about her music is there is no sex undertones in her music like Paper Thin and is more true Hip Hop especially from the 1980s. Queen Latifah and MC Lyte and Salt N Pepa were the ones who got me into female Hip Hop and something I was brought up around as a child until things took a shift.Â
#5 Shannon - Let The Music Play
A good 80s feel good song from the game Scarface The World Is Yours and the game was released in 2006 on PlayStation 2 but the song was released in 1983. It’s a song you can dance to thanks to the upbeat 80s drum machines which gives it that danceable appeal to it which I loved like forever it’s good to hear it again actually.Â
#4 Big Punisher - Twinz (Deep Cover)
Now I was surprised to find this on True Crime New York City and you know I was searching for his Capital Punishment album after hearing this again and one of my favourites on the album. Once again real Hip Hop and something I love about the genre and his flow and instrumentals which I always tie in Notorious B.I.G. and not just because they are both let’s say large but they are so similar and I do mean that in the upmost way.
#3 Zapp & Roger - More Bounce To The Ounce
Time to get my perm swinging with full volume in effect. This song was on Grand Theft Auto Vice City and the game came out in 2002 but the song came out in 1980. I love the vocoder on the song and the whole funky funk me up instrumental backing when music was feel good and not so negative. You know there’s more bounce to the ounce and something I love to sing though I have to refrain right about now as it’s 6.57 AM LOL!Â
#2 Man Parrish - Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop)
What I love about 80s Hip Hop the instrumentals and this is just one of my favourites I over enjoy if that is such a word in this context. The song was also on Grand Theft Auto Vice City and on the PlayStation 2 or though the song itself was first released in 1982. I love the congas on the track and the overall robotic dance appeal it’s something I can listen to over and over or though seven minutes of song is more than enough to be satisfied.Â
#1 Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock
My favourite song especially 80s Hip Hop and old school Electro song and something I can dance to. The song was sampled from Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express and appeared on the Scarface The World Is Yours Soundtrack and was on PlayStation 2. The beat drives me crazy and into a drive which that is one thing I love about this song it has a lot of drive to it and something I like to pump up when listening to it.Â
